Sospensioni: la materia che parla

Susanne Kutter, Arcangelo Sassolino, Marco Tirelli, Giuseppe Uncini

From 19 March to 9 May 2025

The new exhibition at the MAAB Gallery, Sospensioni: la materia che parla [Suspensions: the material that speaks], presents works by four artists – Susanne Kutter, Arcangelo Sassolino, Marco Tirelli and Giuseppe Uncini. Despite their different experiences and languages, these artists all share a common interest in the deep exploration of materiality and the interaction between space, form and perception.

Susanne Kutter (Wernigerode, 1971) works with a range of mediums, including installation, performance, sculpture, photography and video. Her work often explores the critical relationship between nature and culture, shedding light on the loss of security and intimacy in everyday life. Despite the seemingly solid nature of the supports, her works convey a sense of vulnerability and instability. The sculptures seem to challenge the orderly calm, suggesting a constantly changing world, where the material becomes a testament to a constant interaction with the environment, and where the audience is invited to reflect on their perception and experience of the reality around them.

Arcangelo Sassolino (Vicenza, 1967) examines the tension between strength and fragility, between resistance and vulnerability. Concrete, a heavy and imposing material, becomes the medium through which the artist explores the concept of resistance to pressure, defiance of physical laws and a power capable of changing the perception of space. At the same time, the work on exhibit expresses both a feeling of immobility and one of action, almost as if the very inertia of the material, concrete, concealed a latent power ready to manifest itself. The sculpture seems to be confronting the impossible: resisting its own fragility.

Marco Tirelli (Rome, 1956) ponders the relationship between time and space through the potential of light. Tirelli’s works in the exhibition act as a kind of reflective pause within a reality that is moving and transforming. His geometric compositions, which often feature minimal linear forms, create a play of visual tensions between formal rigour and temporal suspension. Tirelli’s works seem to challenge the static, inviting the viewer to perceive the continuous change between light and shadow, between presence and absence.

Giuseppe Uncini (Fabriano, 1929 – Trevi, 2008) transforms industrial materials such as concrete and steel into extraordinarily expressive sculptures. In Uncini’s hands, these materials, which traditionally evoke a sense of hardness and rigour, become a means to explore the relationship between space, form and perception. His sculptures are not merely objects to be observed, but structures that interact with the environment and challenge our understanding of architectural space.

These artists, connected by their focus on material, form and perception, invite the public to consider the world around us and the infinite expressive possibilities offered by the materials. Sospensioni: la materia che parla thereby becomes an space for experience, where each element contributes new visions and meanings, in a game poised between balance and tension.
